New Beginning. Mulcahy’s. This Sunday. Get Excited.

Long Island Fights caught up with three-time world kickboxing champion Bobby "The Jackhammer" Campbell to talk about his Jackhammer Promotions’s “New Beginning” event at Mulcahy’s in Wantagh, this Sunday, August 21.

And it looks like yours truly will be handing out some hardware…

Bobby, give me three reasons to be excited for the “New Beginning” event on Sunday, August 21.
1) This is a huge event at Mulcahy’s – and everyone knows Mulcahy’s – and the fights are all very competitive fights.  2) The ring card girls are always awesome. 3) And alcohol.

So Mulcahy’s, ring card girls, and alcohol.

There you go.

I understand you got some new ring card girls. For whatever reason, I was not asked to be a judge, but what were the judges looking for?

Personality more than looks, I think.

Come on now.

Yeah, you know, to pump up the crowd. And looks too.

I got it. So there was no talent portion? Singing, juggling fire?

No, definitely not that. But that would have been funny.

Maybe next time. Give us a preview about the headliner and whatever else promises to makes this show a great one .

The main event is Chrissy Yandolli, a local girl who always fights on my cards, vs. Heather Hardy, who’s a good amateur boxer. The kicker vs. the puncher is a classic match-up, and it’s going to be an awesome fight.

This is the first show that we’re doing Fight of the Night. I’m very excited about it. Before the title fights, Long Island Fights will pick which amateur fight it thought was the best fight. Both fighters will be awarded a big trophy I got for them, so I really want the fighters to give their best.

And a lot of the trainers [for the fighters on this card] are professional world champions: Tom Bottone, Peter Kaljevic, Devon Cormack, I got Chris Algieri.

I also have a comedian doing a ten-minute set during intermission. Fatty Balls they call him.

Where are you in terms of your fighting/promoting career? Has your focus shifted from fighting to promoting?

My heart remains in fighting. That’s what I love to do. I defended my title successfully four times and lost the fifth when I lost to Richard Waller, all in less than 26 months, but I’m waiting for a rematch against Richard Waller. I’m hoping to go to England, to fight Gary Hamilton in November; that’s a fight I really want to do.

What’s next for you as a promoter?

I have a big event at Big Al’s [in Amityville] on September 23 called Gym Wars. It’s the first time I’m doing this concept: Big Al’s Family Fitness vs. East Islip Health and Fitness. Personal trainers vs. personal trainers. They have no experience, but they’re training for a couple months. I think it’s going to be quite a show.

I’ll be there. And of course I’ll be there on Sunday.
