Kara, Rodriguez Crowned Champions at Season's Beatings

(Rodriguez with the belt  -- and Melissa and Kim)

World champion kickboxer and the man behind Jackhammer Promotions Bobby Campbell smiled as I left Big Al's last night and said, "It was a wild night."

If by "wild," he meant volatile boxing, kickboxing, and grappling action inside and out of the ring, then, yes, wild indeed.

Nonetheless, the Jackhammer Promotions' "Season's Beatings" event provided plenty of highlight reel strikes and slick submissions from some of Long Island's toughest young amateur fighters.

Check out the results of the entire night, including the Jackhammer Promotions NY State Super Heavyweight Championship boxing match between Malik Kara and Doug Tatore, and video footage of the NY State Muay Thai Championship fight between George Turner and Jo Jo Rodriguez.

George Turner Fights for NY State Muay Thai Supremacy

(Turner with Seth Tiringer. Photo property of Long Island Fights)

I first saw George Turner fight last March as part of the Lights Out Promotions' “March Madness” card at Big Al’s in Amityville. He took on Keon Savage in a Muay Thai contest and wore black and yellow Batman trunks, a tribute to a recently deceased friend.

“Batman’s fighting a killer,” the guy next to me announced, thumbing towards Savage.

I nodded and then watched as Turner withstood hard leg kicks and heavy power punches, attacked the lead leg with crisp, precise kicks, and punished his opponent’s body. And that was Round 1.

“Boxeo Azteca” Results and Recap

by Rocco the intern

I entered the majestic Paramount in Huntington knowing I was in for a great night of boxing. It was the first of hopefully many fight nights at this theater as it's the perfect stage for some of the up and coming fighters from this talent-rich region. Thirty minutes before the opening bout of a six-fight card promoted by Star Boxing, I went backstage to see the young boxers prepare for their big night.  Each seemed to have his own routine -- some rested and relaxed while others paced with a nervous energy but all 12 were ready to rumble.  Nothing was going to hinder them from giving it everything they had to achieve victory before a sell-out crowd.

In the main event, Chris Algieri (11-0), the undefeated welterweight from Huntington, was stepping up in class to face the tough and experienced Bayan Jargal (15-2-3), fighting out of Arlington, Virginia.  Most members of the media at ringside, including Jack Hirsch, president, Boxing Writers Association of America, felt this was the big test for Algieri.  "This is what I call the measuring stick match-up for Algieri," said Hirsch.  "If he wins tonight he will be considered a true prospect."

Battle of Champions V: Recap and Results

(photos courtesy of Michele Vespi)

With Chris Algieri fighting tonight, Long Island Gladiators promoter Chris Cardona called upon yours truly to handle MC duties tonight. I had a blast. Thank you, Chris and Gladiator Promotions, for the chance to put on the ol’ tux and handle the mic for the evening. I hope the crowd enjoyed it as much as I did.

Let’s get to the fights already…

Rene Ducos def. Jake Imperatore (decision)
This was a close fight that saw both men coming at one another and scoring with punches – and a few kicks, I recall – throughout. Ducos was a little busier with the kicks in the opening round. Fast action in Rd. 2, with both guys hitting really hard. Imperatore focused on the body, Ducos on the head. Ducos’ corner implores him to kick, not just headhunt. Close fight. Ducos opens the third round with some kicks, but an undaunted Imperatore keeps coming forward. In a Don Frye/Yoshihiro Takayama moment, both men stood toe-to-toe and traded 5 or 6 hooks to the head, which fired up the crowd. Imperatore hit 2 good front kicks to the body that backed up Ducos, who answered with punches. Very close, exciting fight.

Ring of Combat 38: Recap and Results

Pat DeFranco vs. Robert Gittens
This one was all DeFranco (Serra-Longo). He won the (brief) stand-up battle and scored with takedowns at will after nearly finishing the fight with a Rd. 1 guillotine. On the mat, DeFranco pounded from guard and half-guard and again nearly finished Gittens in the opening round with the rear naked choke. In the second, DeFranco dropped Gittens with a stinging right hand and slammed him a few times. Again DeFranco looked for the RNC, but stayed calm, and pounded away on the ground for the final 3:30 of the fight as Gittens covered up and absorbed some heavy punches. Pat DeFranco takes the unanimous decision.
